Music & Singing is my life : Ananya
Youth Icon Yi National Media Award Ceremony 2015,
Thunderous applause echoed and time stood still for 17 year-old Ananya Panwar. She was in Dehradoon to receive the prestigious Youth Icon Yi National Award 2015 and had given two performances at the award ceremony. Her first performance was her original composition “Ghosts” which has reached the Semi-finalist position in the under 18 category at the United Kingdom Song writing Contest and two commended entries in the Lyrics only and Singer-Songwriter category. The second time she came back on stage she enthralled the audience with her own rendition of a traditional folk Garhwali song. The whole auditorium appeared to be a fine painting on canvas pulsating with life. The legendary Mr. Narendra Singh Negi was also overwhelmed with joy and blessed Ananya, as the song which she was singing was none other than his own creation — “Thando Re Thando.” Hailing from a Lilliputian village in Pauri-Garhwal , Dehradoon born Ananya has been promoting the traditional folk music of Uttarakhand by creating fusion of the same in order to rekindle and revive her generations’ diminishing interest in folk music. Ananya, a highly versatile musician and singer–songwriter has made her mark on the National and International arena at the young age. She has had the honour of performing in front of the Hon. President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, on the occasion of The National Childrens’ Bravery Awards and has been awarded the Karamveer Chakra and Puruskar for making a social change through music. Music runs in Ananya’s blood as her father was a keen listener and lover of music. A helicopter pilot in Indian Air Force, Late Sqn Ldr Mahendra Singh Panwar was killed in action and left behind a two year-old Ananya and her mother, Wg Cdr (Dr) Sarita Negi Panwar. “As a child I usually kept to myself but found solace and comfort in singing and song-writing which helped fill void left due to the absence of my father. Currently, I am a singer-songwriter, growing and learning more about my art as each day passes by. I hope to study medicine after high school while continuing to weave words into melodies and create art that tells my story. Ultimately, the equation of my life has many undefined variables, but if there is one constant that I know of- it is Music.” says Ananya.

Through the help of music and art, she helped provide alternate pathways to these young kids and had been working with them for the past 5 years. Currently, she has taken it upon herself to help revive and rekindle the diminishing interest in the traditional folk music of Uttarakhand. She hopes that with her efforts in creating contemporary fusions of traditional folk, she will help her generation the bridge that seems to have formed between the culture and the people. The founder and Director of Youth Icon Yi National Awards, Mr. Shashi BhushanMaithani Paras talks about the potential Ananya has.
“I have seen the spark and passion within her. She has made adversity her strength and has worked towards her goals with unwavering resolve. Her achievements at this young age have been recognised by the Youth Icon Awards and she is surely an inspiration for the youth. This serves not only as an award, but also a responsibility which has been put on her shoulders. This recognition will serve as a motivational reminder for her to continue her work and achieve her goals. I am sure that Ananya will take our country’s name to greater heights. “
